Can opium grow in England
Opium has been present in England since it was first introduced by the Romans, along with its huge baggage of knowledge and mythology that has been carried for centuries. According to history Opium traces start appearing in Neolithic times and this is when man begins to be aware of the power and beneficial properties of this marvelous plant. Later we can move on histories time-line and find that Egyptians tombs from three thousand years back, also include opium seeds in their burials, it is said, that they used to prepare a remedy with opium seeds to stop children from crying. Assyrians and Greeks also adopted Opium, and they give it to their athletes to strength them mixed opium seeds, honey and wine. During the dark medieval age, there are not too many records of the presence of opium in England, however it will show up later again.
And opium find the best times to reappear, at the beginning of the industrial revolution, when lots of opportunists started to make fortunes from the ignorance and need of the thrown out workers, who were expelled into poverty by the new born factories. These fakers started to advertise the benefits of opium as an all-purpose remedy for everything and distributed it widely. Poor people embraced this elixir and used it to find some relief to their hunger and emotional chaos. Opium was then even cheaper than food, so worried parents used to give to their children to make them sleep in spite of their hunger, releasing their suffering.
Opium also played a main roll in England’s war against China in 1839. They also found in India’s colonization a good place to grow opium in large quantities and submit the people to their power.
Opium poppy was once free to grow in England, before it was prohibited thanks to the discovery and processing of the alkaloids this latex has, such as morphine and heroin, which if it is true they were meant to help man with pain release, they soon found in young emotionally disturbed people who adopted it to find an easy exit to their tormented lives and become addicted to these new drugs, starting with this the illegal smuggling of these two dangerous and highly addictive substances. Today Opium poppy is restricted into rigid controls to grow for the manufacturing of alkaloids helpful for medicine. But illegal cultivation of opium poppy has not been stopped in spite of serious and severe legislations taken by the governments of almost all countries in the world.
We still can find that opium poppy is present in some private gardens among several poppy species as well, and its grow by traditional gardeners who do not mean to harm anyone by doing this, but to enjoy and share the beauty of this plant. It is also known that opium can grow in England to satisfy the demand of this poppy for ornamental purposes, and florists to build amazing floral arrangements use it. The alkaloid contents of opium poppy grown in Northern countries, decreases considerably.
