Can You Buy Poppy Flowers
The answer is yes, poppies are a widely cultivated plant all aver the world, there are hundreds of species of them, and they are sold in gardening stores, greenhouses and on the Internet. They make a nice gift as any other plant for those who love taking care of them. These plants do not need too much care, and are hardy and easy to grow, they can settle well in a pot, gardens or in natural wild spaces. Poppies are also good for hybridizing and new species and varieties show up every week where these plants are cultivated. Among the countries, which have an important large-scale production of poppy flowers, we can mention England, Holland, United Estates, and Germany.
But unfortunately, poppy flowers do not have a livelong life, when they bloom they remain just for a few days and then; the petals start to fall, leaving the poppy pod on the stem. Both flowers and poppy pods are also dried and sold to make with them beautiful dried flower arrangements. If you are a florist, you can buy live poppy flowers from distributors and also use them for ornamental purposes. This is a recognized good and profitable business and poppies are very demanded and appreciated.
There is just one exception here, the papaver somniferum poppy flower. Since this particular specie contains opium, it’s grown and commercialization is controlled and forbidden in most countries. Strict laws and regulations force the pharmaceutical laboratories, after heavy paperwork, to get the special authorization from local authorities to be able to cultivate this plants with medical purposes, being responsible from keeping these plants restricted into closed harvesting spaces; and the sale of living plants in small scale is totally prohibited. If for some reason these laboratories neglect this obligation, and some plants grown on these restricted areas are sold, they can lose their license, and in consequence, millions of dollars. We can find this controlled poppy growing in countries such as Australia, India, and some Asian countries. Therefore, the availability of live papaver somniferum poppy flowers is almost impossible.
For the rest of the papaver poppy family, there is another story, they are grown all over the globe in gardens, green houses and wide-open spaces, or they simply sprout wildly. Since poppies are hardy plants, they grow almost by their selves. They just need favorable conditions of weather, permeable soils and sunlight. Papaver poppies are nice plants and their colored flowers are beautiful and present a wide range of colors and variations. From the pure white till the dark purple (almost black) of the “Black Indian poppy”, passing through brilliant yellows, oranges, pinks and reds. This makes poppy flowers very suitable for floral arrangements and for gardening decoration.
