Care For Oriental Poppy
About four years ago, on my birthdays’ party (that is in march), my sister showed up, carrying on her hands a beautiful present for me. She knows pretty well how much I love to decorate my house with natural plants and nice ceramic pots. They give a cozy touch to my decoration and it’s like allowing Mother Nature to invade my space with her beauty. Since I enjoy outdoors and I do not have a backyard or a garden, because my New York’s apartment only has a terrace where my beloved plants enjoy sunlight, I have several indoor plants spread all over my home.
“This is gorgeous, Sarah! What kind of plant is this, with such terrific salmon-pink silky flowers?” Sarah perfectly knew, thanks to our long phone conversations, that I had just renewed my living room and that I had dressed it up with an incredible salmon hand made carpet from Turkey, which I bought in our last holidays’ trip. She immediately sited the pot on the table next to the wide window, so sunlight could involve it with its warmth and light. “This is the exact place for it!” She said. “You haven’t answer my question, dear, what is this? Sarah calmly replied “Its an Oriental poppy plant, isn’t it cute?”
My eyes couldn’t stop looking at this breathtaking plant; I checked the delicate bowl-shaped flowers, and I noticed some ink darker spots in the base of each petal and colorful stamens in the center of each bloom; I was impressed, like hypnotized. “It looks so…” I started saying, not aware that I was thinking aloud. “Are you worrying about taking care of your Oriental poppy?” Sarah interrupted my thoughts; “relax”, she continued, “I know you are so busy with your new promotion and spoiling Don (my husband), this Oriental poppy doesn’t need too much care, it is so easy!, for this, you just pay attention to water your plant from time to time and it will be OK. But I must warn you, these flowers won’t live for too long, perhaps a few days more, the petals will fall down and this poppy you look here (she was referring to the flower’s base), will remain here, adding beauty to you decoration, have you noticed, it has also a beautiful color and shape? once it’s dried it also looks spectacular! In the inside you can find the seeds”, she added, “a bunch of them! And if you can, please save some of them for me. If you care properly your plant, next spring it will bloom and you will enjoy the flowers again, try not to move it, once they like a site, they settle down”
I am not a flower expert, but this present from my sister has been cherished by me, and it has awarded me by blooming each spring, in exchange of really basic care. I didn’t need to worry for my Oriental poppy plant care.
