Care For Poppies

If you live in California, you know poppies pretty well; you have enjoyed the beauty and splendor of the poppy fields all along the valley roads when you are traveling. And if you are thinking on modifying your garden or changing some of your garden’s plants, choosing poppies could be a great idea. You can make California poppies grow in almost in place on Earth. They are hardy, beautiful easy to grow plants, which do not need too much care, just basic attention to certain points is needed. California poppies grow anytime, anyplace, you just have to let them alone, some water, some sun and almost-common soil, will allow poppies to grow practically by their selves.

The papaver family (the one the poppies are members) is large; you can find thousands of different species, but all of them share some characteristics. For instance, poppy seeds like to sprout in cool climates, and this means that they germinate easier and faster when the weather is cool, and the right season to spread the seeds is when autumn is approaching to the frost period, or if you miss this chance, when spring is starting and the frost lifts. As poppy seeds are frost resistant they can take ten to twenty days to germinate. If your any reason you do not see them sow, do not worry; seeds are just waiting for the proper conditions to sprout they need well-drained soils. Excess of water and moisture must be avoided, so they grow healthy. You do not need to implant then once they are growing, poppies prefer to settle and not to be disturbed. By spring they will be ready to bloom, these poppies reach about four feet of height and several blossoms come out from each stem. When poppies flourish, they present cup-shaped flowers of several colors, which attract butterflies and bees.

There are two special kinds of poppies appreciated by the gardeners when they specialize in poppy growing: The Oriental and peony flowered poppies are known as perennials spices, this means that oriental and peony poppies growing climate is any season of the year. They reach a height of 2 to 3 feet with large deeply cut leaves and large cup-shaped flowers of many colors in the spring. Besides, oriental and peony poppies prefer an ordinary and permeable garden soil. Cultivators do their sowing in spring, or in summer for blooming the following spring. You have to choose a spot where your poppies are likely to stay for several years. Once the plant dies and dries, you should wait to the next season and they will sprout again.
