Grow Opium Poppies Indoors
Before you decide to grow opium poppies indoors or outdoors –because another way has not been found yet- it is important that you are aware of the risks and consequences that this activity implies. You can get a lot more from something that can start as just a hobby, either something nice as having a pretty flower once a year or going to jail for growing an illegal plant in most places.
For common people to grow opium poppies indoors is an illegal action, especially if we consider, that except for the reason that you don’t have a back yard, growing this plant indoors, seems to be a way of hiding a criminal activity. Something that is not recommendable at all. Perhaps your goal is to have pretty flowers making your living room or dinning room more colorful, but some people may take it, real seriously and it would not be a surprise that a neighbor who had just visited you, could wonder about your integrity and let know the police about your suspicious arrangements. I remember an urban legend about people falling asleep when they had living poppies around, as a consequence of its alkaloids. So if you grow opium poppies indoors and everyone in your house seems to be sleepy, you will be able to claim that the urban legend about poppies is true. For those who suffer insomnia, this could be an interesting idea.
If you have some money burning your pockets and you are a flower lover who likes to have the best quality items to show off your friends, the temptation of building a greenhouse to grow opium poppies indoors –among other plants hopefully-, may arise. This sounds worse because it will really look like you are producing morphine and heroin of the best quality, something laboratory-grade. Even though in some northern countries like England growing poppies is legal, to grow opium poppies indoors using a greenhouse for the task, surely will make police to investigate you and if you get through it, they may keep an eye on you to make sure your intentions don’t go any further.
Another big possibility will be that licensed laboratories that produce morphine and other clinical-used substances from the poppy won’t be happy with your activities and will pressure authorities to force you to get a license –as they have done- and the chances for you to obtain one will be impossible. That again if you live in England, almost anywhere else this will be just out of the question.
These are only some ideas of what will very probably be involved if you want to grow opium poppies indoors, all of this makes me wonder about insisting on it. I don’t see the point; just buy them if you like them.
